Puppies and Pussy Cats

I have noticed while browsing the blogs of artists I admire that we have something in common, a love of animals. Sometimes I visit a blog half a dozen times before I find the furry family member ... But always in the lives of those whose art stirs me there is a much loved cat or dog or perhaps a love of birds ... I wonder why this is?

A much loved friend, has this ATC now, as I made it I cried for the unloved domestic animals of the world. Tonight my thought again turn to the homeless animals and the thousands who are euthanased each year.

Dear Julie

I have found that too. I know that the people I am drawn to have a deep love of animals. I think it's because they have a nurturing heart and they naturally want to extend this to little furry beings. There is a softness about people who love animals isn't there? And all of the artists I admire have animals in their lives.

Our pets(for want of a better word) need us to look after them. And, in return they look after us 100 times over.

I did some voluntary work at a pet shelter (the cat section)some years ago. And fell in love with the brave cats I looked after.

There was something spiritual about cleaning out their cages, hugging them and spending time with them. Being of service to them. I used to give special attention to the ones who were going to be euthanased each week.

I used to come home in tears after each shift. Tears of gratitude for the gift of spending time with tbese beautiful animals. Tears of admiration for their fighting spirits and loving natures. And tears of anger at the destructiveness of the human race. I stopped doing the volunteer work there after 6 months as I was becoming very anti-people after seeing the cruelty to these animals.

I love your ATC. Your friend will treasure it. It speaks volume of your loving heart.

Its wonderful to read your thoughts about abandoned animals.I see first hand this side of their lives as my mum manages the Animal Protection Society in Southern River ( for cats and dogs) and is head dog carer. They have a no euthanase policy,so they keep all until they are homed.
It is run by volunteers and is a very rewarding.
Through many years of very hard work from both of my parents and helpers, there is new accomodation for the cats and dogs, they have doubled the members, and seen the rehoming of the animals speed to a heartwarming pace.
All animals are de-sexed upon arrival to the shelter.
My mothers love is boundless, and someone who I admire above all.
Turning 60 last year seem to give her an extra boost of lifeforce.
How lucky I am to have her in my life.
Just thought I would share part of her amazing story

Dawn and Dotee, thank you so much for sharing your stories, it is sooo good that there are people willing to work for the animals. A little sad though that there needs to be so many carers for abandoned animals.

Dawn give your Mum a hug for me please! And Dotee, you too, it would kill me on the inside to know that a furry baby would not be there next time I returned.

Hugs, Julie
